Who Owns North Wilkesboro Speedway?

Located on the historic grounds of North Wilkesboro, this short track has hosted many NASCAR races. It was built in 1947. It hosted the first Grand National race of Wilkes County. This track is also responsible for launching the stock car racing scene here in North Carolina. The track has been home to several interests throughout its history. Speedway Motorsports now owns it and plans to renovate it.

Speedway Motorsports has announced plans to reopen this track in August. The track will host the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race on May 20, 2023. The track will be repaved in time for the 2023 season. Speedway Motorsports intends to spend $18million on the track's improvement. Speedway Motorsports will pay $2 million to finish the project.

The track was originally built to be an oval racetrack. The land was donated by Enoch STaley and his friends. The track's front section had a steep downhill slope, which created problems. There was also a wooden guardrail in turn one, which caused many accidents. It was also considered out-of-date and had parking issues. Traffic jams were also caused by the two-lane road leading from the track.

NASCAR shifted its races from North Wilkesboro into Rockingham during the 1990s. NASCAR also moved races to bigger markets. It was outgrowing the North Wilkesboro crowd and outgrowing the short track. In 1996, the track closed after a NASCAR Cup Series race. The track had hosted 93 Cup races. The 1989 Holly Farms 400 was the only cup race without qualifiers.


North Wilkesboro dates moved to Texas in 1990. Despite this move, the track continued hosting races with the lowest crowd capacities in the Winston Cup Series.

NASCAR experienced a rapid expansion in its economy in the early 90s. It was hoped that this speedway would serve as a test track to Cup Series teams. Junior Johnson stated that the track was unviable due to lack of funds and disputes between owners. Regardless of the track's status, Junior Johnson hoped that it would be used for all NASCAR minor-league racing series.

Junior Johnson however stated that the track is too small for Cup Series, and was unsure if it could be made into a test track. Johnson also stated that the track was too costly to purchase. However, the track was considered to be the crown jewel of Wilkes County.

Roush racing used the track to test their 2005 model. Roush Racing also hosted a "Race for the Ride", test session for a television program. Jack Roush used it to recruit truck drivers. It hosted the first USAC Silver Crown race weekend.
