After the World War II era, auto racing was a popular pastime throughout the United States. The post-war economy contributed to road racing's popularity. Elkhart Lake had its first road race in 1950. The Elkhart Valley Road Racing Club of America was responsible for the first race.

Clif Tufte was a former highway engineer who laid the road America's four-mile circuit. He chose 525 acres of farmland outside Elkhart Lake to build the track. Tufte had to find a way to raise the money to purchase the land and build the course. He sold some of the stock and the track went up.

Tufte named the track Road America after roads in the United States. The track was built for the first time on September 1955. The 4-mile track was known as "4 miles that go nowhere" and was nicknamed "4 Miles That Go Nowhere". IndyCar opted for a 4.048 mile layout in 1997. It's still the same today.

In the late 1940s, racing began to thrive on the nation's public roads. In the 1950s, the state legislature banned auto racing on public roads. Tufte started to purchase farm land in the area of Elkhart Lake and Plymouth to allow road races to be held. Tufte then began to map the course. To raise funds for the project, Tufte employed a number influential local citizens as his helpers. He then sought advice from race course owners in Europe.

Road America was established in 1955. Tufte was successful in raising the money needed to build the track. He also sold some of his stock. The track was built on company land, so the company was able provide financing until the entire amount was raised.

Road America is now a world-class course that hosts many events and programs. Road America hosts a variety of motorcycle events as well as other group events. It hosts the SCCA Pirelli World Challenge (weathertech sportscar championship), the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and the AMA Superbike Series. This gives them an advantage over the rest of the racers, as they can quickly overtake other drivers at high speeds and pull away from them again when it's not their turn.

The lightest cars are typically the fastest. This allows them speed up quickly and to gain lots of speed. They also have less power, so they travel a lot faster. They need to make efficient use of energy.

Engines power most modern-day racing cars. These engines are identical to those used in passenger vehicles. These engines are powered by compressed air, instead of petrol. This is because petrol doesn't have enough power to make cars go very fast.
